Ice Usage in the Poultry Industry

At the most recent International Production & Processing Expo, 1,200 exhibitors and 30,000 visitors packed into the Georgia World Congress Center to learn about the latest technological advancements and issues facing the industry. The ultimate aim of the show is to connect buyers and sellers. Although we were not able  to attend this year, we kept an eye on the latest updates to support organization participation and emphasize the necessities for the poultry, meat, and feed industries.

Today, the poultry industry is addressing labeling “fresh.” The USDA has ruled that to be labeled as a fresh product,  stores must assure that raw whole poultry or cuts of poultry have never reached a temperature below 26 °F.  At 26°F, the products are still pliable and soft to the touch, meeting consumer’s expectations of fresh poultry.

Fresh poultry must be chilled within hours and maintained from 26 °F to 40 °F. This temperature range means no increased microbiological risk. With proper handling, storage fresh poultry poses no greater health risk than frozen products.  Additionally,  the quality will be much improved and offers the ability to be used immediately. No thaw time required!

Our flake ice equipment allows the poultry industry to keep products at the right temperatures during processing, distribution, and storage. We have been working with the industry for over 50 years to keep products fresh even before the official label went into effect.  Our subcooled flake ice removes heat from product after slaughter and during processing.  It is also used for storage and topping off shipping cartons. It’s flat, thin shape will provide full contact and not harm outer skin of the product.  With the most surface contact area of any other form of ice, the cooling capacity maintains the ideal temperatures of fresh poultry while also preserving the meat’s moisture levels which adds to the quality and increase profits.

With flake ice models designed for every aspect of the poultry industry, we are able to meet the capacity needs of large-scale processors and wholesalers as well as local poultry retail outlets. We make it our mission to deliver the most appropriately sized ice flakers to maintain the safety and quality of all types of fresh poultry!

Howe Salutes the Manufacturing Day Initiative. Plays Vital Role in Food Production & Preservation

Few things on the planet are more precious than the supplier of energy and sustenance – food. Our population has been growing rapidly, and most experts concur that it will not be possible to meet the increasing demand for food unless there are better preservation and utilization of the plant and animal produce that we are currently “harvesting” from the earth.

One key reason behind food waste is food spoilage and public perception.

First and foremost, consumers want food items that are fresh and have low bacteria and pathogen counts. It is a basic amenity that all civilized nations take for granted. However, lately, because of spiking awareness around how toxic chemicals have permeated our food chain, people are being forced to re-consider the judiciousness of eating processed foods or foods that have been thermally treated to extend the shelf life.

This is where products like flake ice step in.

Maintaining a sufficiently low temperature of food items across the supply chain is one of the most natural ways to inhibit bacterial growth. Using flake ice is a good way to accomplish this goal.

The importance of ice and refrigeration to the food and beverage industry, and thus to the world, is undeniable.

Howe’s Legacy and Its Role in Better Food Utilization:

Started in 1912 with the simple goal of manufacturing refrigeration equipment and flake ice makers that retain customers for centuries, Howe has been a market leader for more than 100 years. Because of our extensive legacy and commitment to excellence, the company possesses a rare co-mingling of experience and technological proficiency which guarantees products that are both water and power efficient.

Howe has been contributing significantly to improving cooling methods for the food and beverage industry and reducing water and electricity waste. In the long run both efforts are bound to have a positive impact on a global scale.

This is one of the reasons we have been honored with the “Manufacturer of the Year Award” presented by the Alliance for Industry and Manufacturing in Illinois.

screen-shot-2016-10-07-at-10-57-13-amThe recognition comes in time for the National Manufacturing Day celebrated on the 7th of October 2016. Howe is actively participating in this endeavor by highlighting the importance of manufacturing to the USA’s economic prosperity and acknowledging how manufacturers similar to us affect everything from food and shelter to the security of the country’s population.

Howe Will be Exhibiting at the International Baking Industry Expo

You might be sitting there wondering how ice, such as the flake ice we sell at Howe Corp., baking, and ovens are even connected. Well here you go – as you know, the magic of baking happens long before a cake, cookie, pie or bread even hits the oven. It’s all in proper proportions and handling of ingredients that can make or break a product.

Because we have been working with commercial bakers for many years, it’s natural that we would be attending the International Baking Industry Exposition (IBIE) taking place on Oct 8-11 in Las Vegas. It is the largest event for the grain-based food industry. More than 20,000 professionals in the baking industry from 100+ countries represent every segment of the baking industry. The show held every three years features educational programs, business sessions, and an exposition of ingredients and products that help shape innovation, trends, and success.

It’s also a great time to be thinking about baked goods. With the low-carb craze over, the baking industry is seeing a resurgence. Artisan breads, pies, cookies, and cakes are once again on the rise. Starbucks also sees the potential in fresh baked goods. The company has partnered with Princi a high-end Italian bakery to bring handcrafted food and artisanal baked goods to their new specialty stores beginning next year.

So, where does Howe come into the recipe? A few years ago we posted a blog on our work with the baking industry. Commercial bakers know that flake ice outperforms other types of ice for chilling dough and ingredients. Because of flake ice’s thin shape and large surface area, it cools products quickly and evenly.

At Panera Bread, for example, our machines provide the bakers the ability to process dough and form it into the many different forms that are served in their bakeries and restaurants. The dough must be cooled to the proper temperature before it is delivered to the stores for baking each day. If the dough is too warm, it will continue to rise. Cooling the dough maintains the shape and ensures that the bread will bake to the right specifications.

At IBIE we will be demonstrating our machines and the benefits of flake ice in Booth 219. Our “Cool” team will be on hand to answer any questions and explain how flake ice– and Howe–are the Proven Best Choice for equipment, service, and reliability.

If you are in Vegas for the show, we hope you will stop by Booth 219 and see what’s cooking!

Preserving Foods at the Local Level

An Increasing Market

Locally Grown Food Image 1“Think globally, act locally” is a concept that has been believed in for many years, and the push to apply this axiom to locally grown foods continues to expand. The planting, harvest, and consumption of local food has been embraced by farmers, parents, school officials, civic leaders, and citizens of all stripes. For example, the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) has released a fact sheet that details its increasing investment in growing the market for local and regional foods. An increasing number of cities are starting to sponsor local food day events to help raise visibility and to keep their local economies sustainable. A recent report by National Public Radio tells of how a Washington, DC school district’s efforts to promote local food has not only raised awareness, but has also resulted in students actually eating more of their lunches and throwing less away. The popularity of the process continues to grow, along with the awareness of the many advantages that come from the production of local foods.

Many Reasons to Buy Locally

When food is produced locally, consumers and communities can achieve significant benefits. Recently reprinted in GrowNYC, Vern Grubinger has researched and published a number of important advantages achieved with local food production. Crops that are picked at their peak and that have less distance to travel retain the highest levels of flavors and nutrients. Less travel distances also saves energy, less chances for contamination and food spoilage which eliminates waste. Local farms often grow many varieties of crops, helping to increase overall genetic diversity in agriculture. Buying food from a local supplier also helps farmers with their bottom line, allowing them to receive full retail prices where they normally would have to sell their products wholesale and nearly at-cost. Other important benefits include local community building and benefiting the environment with clean-running, small scale agricultural operations.

Keeping Food Fresh and Safe

While local farming has proven to be beneficial to communities, maintaining the quality of freshly harvested food can be a challenge. One of the most reliable and time-honored methods is using flake ice. For over 50 years, Howe Corporation has helped the produce industry keep their products fresh. Flake ice has the most surface contact area of any ice form, giving it exceptional cooling capabilities. The shape of the flakes have fewer sharp Locally Grown Food Image 2edges than other ice forms, reducing damage for all freshly farmed products that are stored in it. Howe Ice is the coldest longest lasting ice which results in labor, water & energy savings. In addition to transportation, flake ice can help local farmers with displays that not only keep their foods fresh and fully hydrated, but maintain the best appearance and aesthetics for maximizing sales. Packing and displaying with flake ice not only helps solve the problem of preserving freshly farmed local foods, but it also helps maintain premium levels of product quality from harvest to final sale.

Choose Howe for Premium Ice Machines

Ice machines from Howe Corporation help local food producers ship, preserve, and display their harvests. We offer a number of long-lasting machines that produce ice at all different volumes, perfect for fresh foods of all kinds. To learn more about our flake ice machines and how they can add quality and value to all levels of local food production, please contact our team directly.

Financing is an Affordable and Smart Way to Add New Equipment

LTO Image 1Effectively managing cash flow is important for success. Equipment financing and lease-to-own programs enable businesses to get the best quality equipment rather than settling for less with what capital is currently available which can be more costly over time.

Investing in new equipment is a large undertaking for businesses. You have a few options. Lease-to-own programs allow you to obtain best quality equipment to grow your business and gives you time to decide whether to make the final purchase. Finance programs make it easy to obtain the equipment you need with payments that can be easily added to your budget. It can be most important to have the equipment you need as demands change, allowing you to remain competitive in the industry and satisfy your customers with best quality products they come back for.

What are LTO & Finance Programs?

Purchasing equipment outright has the potential of leaving you with machinery that might not be right for the job. If purchasing equipment is not a sensible solution for your business, leasing offers an alternative. Traditional equipment leasing offers you the equipment for a certain time period and then it is returned. In lease-to-own, if you want to keep the equipment after the initial lease period is up, you have option to purchase it or return it if another size or type is required. Finance programs can help with smaller payment amounts and owning the equipment at the end. Your monthly investment becomes an asset. Many times seasonal payment options are used to work with you during your peak times.

Benefits of LTO & Finance Programs

LTO allows companies to integrate new equipment into their operations, to see how the equipment works, and to evaluate whether the equipment meets your needs and standards. Maintenance and service may be included in the LTO contract saving you additional time and money. This program can also offer potential tax advantages as payments may be fully deductible. Financing equipment is easier than applying for a bank loan for a purchase. Working with specialized equipment finance companies offers advantages such as full financing, quick turnaround time, and fixed rates. Terms of the agreement are set in advance so there are no surprises when the payment period is over.

Adding Howe Into the Mix

Howe Corporation has been successfully supplying equipment for many years, consistently exceeding the expectations of customers, being the first choice when selecting Flake Ice Equipment. Howe is here to help support and grow your business with payment options through finance partners. We offer customized solutions for managing business capital and help establish business credit for the future. This approach allows customers to experience the highest quality flake ice equipment for variety of cooling applications that can lead to increase in revenues and gain a greater share in the marketplace. Flake Ice from Harvest to Plate: At Every Link in the Supply Chain:

Cooling Food at Every Step of the Journey

To see an example of how flake ice is essential in cooling food, all one really needs to do is visit the seafood department of a grocery store. Chances are, their fresh fish will be displayed on flake ice. We have previously discussed the myriad number of ways that flake ice helps keep seafood fresh and cool in the marketplace by combining low temperatures and moisture for perfect preservation. However, the supermarket display shelf isn’t the only place where this product helps deliver the best quality seafood. Flake ice is used at every step of the seafood supply chain: from harvest, transportation, and processing to the dinner plate.

A Vital Part of the Harvest

Fishing Vessle Image - Feb. 2016The first link in the seafood supply chain is the harvest. The key to keeping freshly caught fish as well-preserved as possible is immediate cooling, and ice plays an essential role in that process. While there are a number of different types of ice to choose to preserve a fresh catch, flake ice has an abundance of advantages. It maintains the best surface contact keeps freshly caught fish from becoming bruised and injured, as it has no sharp edges. Howe Shipboard ice flakers can make ice using either fresh or seawater, with each having its own set of unique advantages. For superior taste and presentation down the line, the best harvests use flake ice.

Keeping a Catch Cool During Processing and Transportation

Process-Wholesale - Feb. 2016In order to retain the highest levels of quality and nutrition, seafood must be handled and preserved properly from the moment it is caught to its final sale. The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United States (FAO) has laid out numerous guidelines for the handling of raw seafood. One of the most essential elements in the process is to ensure a continuous flow in the handling of seafood, avoiding the accumulation of unchilled fish at any time. Flake ice is a time-honored and economical way of keeping seafood cool and safe, with highly productive machines that produce enough ice to ensure that all catches stay safe and fresh. The final result is seafood that remains saleable and delicious when prepared.

Wholesale and Retail Sales: the Final Step

Retail Image - Feb. 2016After seafood has been caught, processed, and shipped, there is no more attractive or
effective method of display than flake ice. In addition to keeping fish safe and cool, flake ice helps all types of seafood retain optimal levels of color, moisture, and general presentation qualities—essential for both wholesale and retail applications. Finally, the ultimate test of quality occurs on the dinner plate. Whether fresh fish is sold to a restaurant or a family, nothing beats the flavor of a moist, fresh, and well-preserved catch. Recent studies have shown that retail sales of fresh seafood are increasing; providing consumers with the best quality fish available is the best way to ensure this trend continues.

Howe Flake Ice is There at Every Step

Whether onboard a fishing vessel, in a processing plant, a transportation vehicle, or a sales outlet, flake ice from Howe Corporation’s machines can handle the workload. Our Rapid Freeze® flake ice machines can produce 1,000 to 40,000 lbs. of flake ice every day.
