Understanding New Energy Star Requirements for Commercial Ice Makers

The Energy Star program began in the United States in 1992. Backed by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), the goal of the program was to improve energy efficiency to help consumers save money while benefiting the environment. To date, over 3.5 trillion kilowatt hours of electricity have been saved along with $450 billion dollars.

An Introduction to ACIM Specification Version 3.0

In May 2017, the Version 3.0 ENERGY STAR Automatic Commercial Ice Maker (ACIM) Specification was effective January 28, 2018. Units not meeting the new specification no longer can carry the Energy Star symbol. The ACIM category was introduced into the Energy Star program over a decade ago and initially included water and energy savings.

Now, certifying under Version 3.0, ACIM energy usage requirements are even more restrictive.  This results in significant financial and environmental savings.  As with previous versions of the ENERGY STAR program, consumers and contractors can compare certified products side by side at the same operating conditions.  For example, ENERGY STAR publishes Ice Hardness Factor which compares the cooling capacity of the ice produced to that of pure ice by percentage.
